Artist Biography

Birth name: Loreena Isabel Irene McKennitt
Born: 17 February 1957 (age 55)
Morden, Manitoba, Canada.
Origin: Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
Genres: Celtic, world, New Age
Occupations: Musician, songwriter, producer
Instruments: Voice, piano, harp, accordion

Early life: McKennitt was born in Morden, Manitoba of Irish and Scottish descent to parents Jack (died 1992; a livestock dealer) and Irene McKennitt (1931-2011; a nurse). She moved to Stratford, Ontario in 1981, where she still resides. When Loreena was young she wanted to become a veterinarian but she found that music chose her rather than she it. Developing a passion for Celtic music, she learned to play the Celtic harp and began busking at various places, including St. Lawrence Market in Toronto in order to earn money to record her first album. Career : McKennitt’s first album, Elemental, was released in 1985, followed by To Drive the Cold Winter Away (1987), Parallel Dreams (1989), The Visit (1991), The Mask and Mirror (1994), A Winter Garden (1995), The Book of Secrets (1997), An Ancient Muse (2006), A Midwinter Night’s Dream (2008), and The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2010). All of her work is released under her own label, Quinlan Road. In 1990, McKennitt provided the music for the National Film Board of Canada documentary, “The Burning Times” a feminist revisionist account of the Early Modern European witchcraft trials. The main theme would later be rerecorded by her and her band and called “Tango to Evora,” a track which appears on her album, The Visit. In 1993, she toured Europe supporting Mike Oldfield. In 1995, her version of the traditional Irish song “Bonny Portmore” was featured in the Highlander series. McKennitt’s single “The Mummers’ Dance” received airplay in North American markets during the spring of 1997, and was used as the theme song for the short-lived TV series, Legacy. It also saw use in the trailer for a wide-release 1998 Drew Barrymore film, Ever After. Her music appeared in the movies The Santa Clause, Soldier, Jade, Holy Man, The Mists of Avalon and Tinkerbell; and in the television series Roar, Due South, and Full Circle (Women and Spirituality). Name: The band’s name came from the book Death of a Chieftain by Irish author John Montague. Assisted early on by Garech Browne, they signed with his company Claddagh Records. They needed financial success abroad, and succeeded in this, as within a few years their third album’s sleeve note section was printed in three languages. Work: The band has recorded many albums of instrumental Irish folk music, as well as multiple collaborations with popular musicians of many genres, including Country music, Galician traditional music, Cape Breton and Newfoundland music, and rock and roll. They have performed with Luciano Pavarotti, the Rolling Stones, Ultravox, Carlos Núñez, Van Morrison, Ashley MacIsaac, Glass Tiger, Bela Fleck, Siobhán O’Brien, Moya Brennan, Mark Knopfler, Loreena McKennitt, Ry Cooder, Los Cenzontles, Mick Jagger, Elvis Costello, Roger Daltrey, Nanci Griffith, Tom Jones, Sinéad O’Connor, Natalie Merchant, James Galway, The Corrs, Art Garfunkel, Sting, Rosanne Cash, Jim White, Ziggy Marley, Lyle Lovett, Jackson Browne, Eros Ramazzotti, Kepa Junkera, Mike Gordon, Madonna, and numerous Country-western artists, including Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Nickel Creek and others. In May 1986 they performed at Self Aid, a benefit concert held in Dublin that focused on the problem of chronic unemployment which was widespread in Ireland at that time. In 1994 they appeared in Roger Daltrey’s production, album and video of A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who. The front covers of the first four albums were designed by Edward Delaney. From Flake Music to The Shins (1992–2000) The Shins began in 1996 as a side project for singer/songwriter James Mercer, whose primary band was Flake Music in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mercer formed Flake Music in 1992 with Neal Langford on guitar, Phil Higgs and then Marty Crandall on bass, and Jesse Sandoval on drums. During the next 5 years Flake Music released several singles, a full-length album, and began touring largely due to the help of other bands like Modest Mouse. In 1996, Mercer began writing what would eventually become The Shins’ first record. Flake Music came to an end around this time leaving Mercer with an opportunity to record, “Nature Bears A Vacuum” a 7″ EP released by Omnibus Records. For their earliest shows, The Shins performed as a duo with Mercer recruiting Sandoval to play drums. “Nature Bears A Vacuum” was released with no expectations of expanding the band’s following beyond Albuquerque. However, the single generated enough attention that Mercer felt it necessary to assemble a full band. Martin Crandall was brought into the fold on keyboards, and Dave Hernandez (frontman of local punk legends Scared of Chaka, which had played dozens of shows with Flake Music) was given bass duties. After a year as this lineup, during which half the songs on debut album “Oh, Inverted World” (including “New Slang”) were penned, Hernandez moved to New York City. Neal Langford was selected as his replacement, and it was this lineup that saw the group embark on a tour with Modest Mouse. (Collect from wikipedia)

IL Volo

Members
Gianluca Ginoble
Piero Barone
Ignazio Boschetto
Origin: Italy
Genres: Operatic Pop
Years active: 2009-Present
Labels: Geffen Records
Website: www.ilvolomusic.com
Voice type: Although called three young tenors, Il Volo is composed of two Tenors (Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone) and one Baritone (Gianluca Ginoble), as stated on many interviews with the group. It is likely that Piero Barone is a Spinto Tenor (easily reaches the high tenor notes), Ignazio Boschetto is a Lyric Tenor (a full rich tenor that can be heard over an orchestra), and Gianluca Ginoble, while technically a Baritone, can also be labeled a Heldentenor (a Baritone with a strong upper register, common among Wagner operas).

Ti Lascio Una Canzone (2009-10), The three pop-opera singers started their career in 2009, when they met on the second edition of the Italian RAI TV music competition show Ti lascio una canzone, held in Sanremo. On May 2, 2009, Gianluca Ginoble won the competition, singing Andrea Bocelli’s “Il mare calmo della sera”. During the competition, the 3 singers were chosen to perform as a trio the Neapolitan evergreen “‘O Sole Mio”. After the competition, they continued to perform together under the names The Tryo, Il Trio, and finally Il Volo. In 2010 the trio participated in the charity single “We Are the World 25 for Haiti”, remake of the 1985 hit song “We Are the World”. In February 2010 they performed the songs “Granada” and “Un Amore Così Grande” during the 60th Sanremo Festival. Also at that festival the trio performed for Queen Rania of Jordan (Regina Rania di Giordania). (From wikipedia)
